Background
‘Sustainable freight
transport’ is an important issue nowadays bearing in mind that over
the past 30 years overall freight transport doubled while road freight transport
increased by a factor three and became the dominant transport mode.
In the same time, railways
continually lost not only market share but also transport volume, whereas inland
waterways just maintained their volumes.
The negative impacts of this development became obvious and political opinion
started to favor freight transport by environmental less harmful transport modes. However, this has not yet
happened. For this reason T&E
the European Federation for Transport and Environment
advocates for sustainable transport and
undertakes a project "Freight:
From Road to Rail" to
disseminate this idea.
