Freight transport doubled during last 30 years within the European Union. Road freight tripled whereas rail transport even decreased. Rail freight share fell below 10 % while road became the dominant mode.

Freight transport in sensitive areas as the Alps or the Pyrenees have particular environmental impacts. These transports have increased in the past and thus increased the negative impacts.
